Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, who has more Olympic medals than anyone else, is a physiological freak of nature. But he wasn’t banned for his double-jointed ankles (that allow him to make more powerful kicks). They didn’t force him to wear special sleeves around his double-jointed elbows (that help him pull through the water faster). They didn’t ask him to remove bone from his extra-long arms.

They didn’t ask him to swim in a separate pool full of thicker liquid. They didn’t ask him to take a tranquilizer before he swam to somehow make it more fair to the other competitors. There was no concerted effort to blunt the “unfair advantage” his natural physiology gave him.

No. We know exactly why this is happening to Caster Semenya, why so many people think it’s okay. It’s racism, sexism, and transphobic bullshit. Fuck this gender-panic fuckery.

I always found it kind of curious that, in 1993, these were shot in black and white. I understand its an artistic decision (one often used to this day) but it has also been used to “age” certain developments to the benefit of those who find it easier to consider these events of oppression and suffering as things of the past. MLK, and his coverage, is an example. This is not an accusation against Mendel, however, as this sort of unintentional separation of the subject and the artist is common in “struggle photographers”

I’m not done, this picture is killing me. The way Lu Ten is holding a pose of formal respect even as Iroh is about to bearhug him. The way they’re both grinning and so glad to see each other. Can you imagine Sozin ever hugging Azulon? Azulon ever hugging either of his sons? Ozai hugging Zuko? Big nope But even in a clearly formal setting, Iroh and Lu Ten are going to hug and that’s just the way things are with this single facet of the Fire Nation royal family.

Sozin started a pointless, violent war with no concrete end date at the end of his life. This pointless war was his primary order and legacy to his descendants. His son, his grandsons, and his grandchildren were always going to be embroiled in violence, before they were expected to do anything else with their lives, including love each other.

Somehow Iroh made it through his upbringing with his ability to love family intact, and nurtured that in his son, while still maintaining the cognitive dissonance needed to carry on a campaign of pointless, endless violence, and to encourage his son to do the same until one of them was dead.
